Repair or Replace Your Industrial Electronics? How to Make an Educated Decision
Repair or replace your damaged industrial electronics?
Occasionally it’s a clear cut decision like the customer with a burn hole the size of North Dakota in his circuit board. Definitely dumpster material. More often, there are a few things to consider when making industrial electronic repair decisions. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
How much did it cost new?
Depends on what it is. The higher the original cost of the item, the more cost effective industrial electronic repair will be. A simple example would be power supply repair – if the item is a $150 power supply, it was mostly likely not designed or manufactured to be repaired, only replaced and it will cost more to repair it than to replace it. Buy a new one. But, (there’s always a but) what if you can’t find this item anymore? If you cannot find a suitable replacement, the only option is repair.
How badly is it damaged?
We love to get damaged items and bring them back to life – it’s a challenge we at ACS enjoy. And we’ve had some crazy stuff – circuit boards flooded in Hurricane Katrina and literally coated in mystery gunk; forklift blades through servo drives; fists through touch screens (yes, it’s true); mouse contaminated circuit boards (yuck!) – you name it! Most of these items and many others have been repairable. Call and tell us your story and we’ll help you figure this one out.
How fast do I need it back?
We like to work fast but sometimes you need it even faster. Say a deadline is looming and production is down. If you need to get back up and running in 24 hours or less, you will probably need to buy a replacement, either refurbished or new.
After you get a replacement, ship your damaged item to ACS and we can repair it so you have a back up for the next time. You might be surprised to know how many companies don’t have a back up for critical equipment for their production lines and believe me, they are howling in pain when their equipment breaks down – we could probably hear them without the telephone!
How expensive will shipping be?
Weight and speed determine shipping costs. You can go online to most shippers (UPS, Fed Ex, trucking companies) and get an idea of what it will cost to ship. The heavier it is and the faster it needs to go the more it’s going to cost. For example, say you got your 150 lb servo motor repaired – it would cost approximately $600 to ship UPS Next Day Air Early A.M. delivery from Maryland to Chicago.
Is There a Warranty?
If your warranty is expired on your damaged industrial electronics and you need it repaired, you will be glad to know that ACS offers warranties on virtually all of our work. So now, your repaired item will once again have a warranty. Now, that’s a comfort!
